I feel bullied by Valentine’s Day. It’s not just the scramble of finding cards for my children’s classmates (which I always do the day before so all that’s left are the ones with Star Wars or Hello Kitty on them), but I also hate the pressure to do something special for my husband. If I don’t do something on Valentine’s Day that means I am neglecting him and don’t love him enough. If I do do something (and I just said doodoo, as my daughter always points out), then I am letting greeting card companies dictate when and how I cherish my husband. Shouldn’t it be according to my own timeline?

Next is what to get him: I feel odd getting him flowers. Chocolates are nice, but boring. A great bottle of scotch with sexy lingerie (for me) nestled in a box is always a win, but this year I am going to pick out a small part of our life together and sing its praises. It’s something sweet that is nestled in the fabric of our marriage; going to bed.

I am not talking about doing the one thing (although I love that too). I am talking about climbing into bed and going to sleep. I sometimes get so excited about getting into bed with him that I literally bounce on the bed and kind of squeal. (As I have gotten older, this becomes less endearing and more bizarre. It’s one thing when a 22 year old does it, but when a woman in her late 40s indulges in that behavior, it’s a little Grey Gardens. But I can’t help it.). I get to climb into bed, sleep beside him all night and, here’s the kicker…I GET TO WAKE UP BESIDE HIM.

I love the way he smells, his big, masculine presence, how he can sleep through anything. I love that it is hours and hours together. The house is quiet; our sweet children are safe and asleep. We are together, so close and yet separate. Sometimes we talk. Sometimes he just rolls close to me and I rub his head while I read my own book. Sometimes if the world has been particularly chaotic, or if we have a wonderful book, we’ll read to each other. Our favorites are David Benioff’s City of Thieves, William Manchester’s The Last Lion, and Owen Wister’s The Virginian. My husband has a beautiful voice and it’s so comforting to listen as I snuggle under the covers. Going to sleep together is a hidden surprise in the box of marriage that wasn’t announced in the advertising. It’s like eating cake after eating cake. It’s all good and it’s not even fattening.

Well, there, I just sent out a Valentine, didn’t I?
